Tomorrow

Well, I managed to accomplish nothing! Yep, absolutely nothing. My closet is still a mess and so are my cabinets. I am no more organized or thin than I was in June. Another wasted summer. Well, not totally wasted. I did read a few books. I went to the gym. I did a lot of scrapbook layouts. I worked at two other jobs. But I didn't really accomplish much on my to do list. Then again, I like to look at September as a fresh start. A whole new school year. A chance to start over again. We'll see what it brings.
Tomorrow we go back. Patrick is not in the team of teachers he wanted to be in. They decided to keep together a small group of boys from last year. He was disappointed at first but he is happy now. He loves being a friend to Michael, his classmate in the wheelchair. He and the other boys have learned so much from Michael, and I hope that Michael has learned from them. I have learned from all of them, even after my years in special ed. I have learned that children are more accepting than adults. I have learned that not all middle school boys are total schmucks (at least not all of the time). I have learned that if you look past the appearance of a young man with obvious disabilities, you can find a sense of humor and friendship that you would have otherwise missed. And I have learned that even though we are often frustrated beyond belief with our second child, we have raised a compassionate and loving young man that we can be so very proud of. I am glad that Mr. Dobbs, the counselor kept them together. At first I was disappointed too. The other teachers would have been better for Patrick. But I think he will learn more from Michael than he would have from the teachers. And those lessons will serve him well.
